The S 580 4MATIC is the flagship sedan in the 2026 Mercedes-Benz lineup, built around a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with mild hybrid assist. Output is 496 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, routed through a 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic and standard 4MATIC all-wheel drive. Zero to 60 takes 4.3 seconds, and it’s a performance that’s easy to forget about because the cabin is so quiet at speed.
How the Mercedes Benz S580 Rides
AIRMATIC air suspension is standard. The system levels the car automatically based on passenger and cargo load and lowers the ride height at highway speeds for improved stability and aerodynamics. On roads that aren’t always kind to suspension (and around Kalamazoo, you know the ones), that self-adjusting ride quality is something you feel on every drive.
Despite a 126.6-inch wheelbase and an overall length just over 209 inches, the S 580’s turning circle is 42 feet wall-to-wall. Maneuvering through tight parking lots and downtown streets is more manageable than the car’s size suggests.
Fuel economy is 17 city and 27 highway on premium. The mild hybrid system smooths out stop-start transitions and helps the V8 coast more efficiently during lighter driving.
Interior
Active multicontour front seats with massage are standard equipment. Ten massage programs include a hot-stone mode that combines heat with massage, and the side bolsters tighten during cornering to hold you in place. Rear passengers get 43.8 inches of legroom, even more than the front row, which is typical of a car designed as much for the back seat as the driver’s seat.
Ambient lighting runs through 64 colors and responds to what’s happening around the car. The LEDs provide visual alerts tied to driving conditions and change tone with climate adjustments. AIR BALANCE is standard, with cabin air ionization and an available fragrance system that’s subtle enough to notice without being intrusive.
MBUX and Connectivity
The MBUX infotainment system uses a central touchscreen with touch-sensitive controls and natural-voice interaction. You can speak conversationally (asking for the nearest gas station, or saying that it’s too warm) and the system responds without requiring specific command phrases.
Up to seven driver profiles store more than 800 individual preferences, from seat and mirror positions to climate and media settings. Fingerprint and face recognition handle authentication, so the car adjusts to each driver automatically.
An augmented-reality head-up display projects navigation graphics onto the windshield, placing directional cues over the road surface itself. For unfamiliar routes and highway exits, it’s a noticeable improvement over glancing at a center screen.
The Burmester 3D Surround Sound system delivers 710 watts across 15 speakers with personalization modes to shape the sound to your preference.
Safety and Driver Assistance
The Driver Assistance Package is standard on every S-Class. That includes DISTRONIC adaptive cruise control with active steering assist and Automatic Lane Change, which signals and executes lane changes on the highway when conditions allow. Separately, the PRE-SAFE system detects an impending collision and can tension seatbelts, close windows, and adjust seating positions before impact.
A center air bag between the driver and front passenger is standard. Rear frontal air bags are available. Blind Spot Assist works alongside Vehicle Exit Warning, which alerts passengers before they open a door into approaching traffic.
Proactive side-impact protection can detect an imminent side collision and raise the ride height by 10 mm to direct crash forces into stronger structural areas (this capability requires the available E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL suspension).
What’s New for 2026
The 2026 S 580 offers optional model badge deletion for a cleaner trunk appearance and a new 19-inch wheel design. These are subtle changes, consistent with a model that’s already thoroughly equipped.
Mercedes-Benz has previewed a redesigned 2027 S-Class with higher output (530 hp), an illuminated grille, and the new MB.OS operating system. The 2026 S 580 represents the mature, fully refined version of the current generation, with years of development behind every system in the car.
